Springtime is here, and with that come the bears in our neighborhoods. With THAT needs to come a heightened awareness of our surroundings and protecting our homes and cars from those nosey hungry neighbors.
The BEAR League of Lake Tahoe is an organization dedicated to educating us residents and visitors alike of our fellow friends, as well as working to protect Bears and their livelihood here. They were here first, and we must remember that as we create our homes and spaced here.
The BEAR League states, “We work continuously to keep bears safe, alive and happy (yes, bears express emotions like happiness … and unfortunately, fear and sadness as well). Please help us positively affect the lives of as many of our dear furry friends as we possibly can.”
If you’re new to the area, or have just purchased your first Lake Tahoe home, we remind you to remove all food items from your cars, keep coolers inside, and lock your doors. There’s a saying up here, “I lock my doors against the bears, not the people.” Tahoe is a relatively very safe community, but our hungry neighbors are SMART and know how to open doors, find open windows, and climb their way in. Bears know what a fridge look like, they love sweets, it’s true, and will eat to their hears content, before exiting the same way they came in. Bears don’t generally damage property unless they can’t get out… that’s when they start ransacking things.
Be SMART as well, and keep enticements away from bears. Prevention is better than Reparation.
